At Stardom Schools, excursions were one of the most exciting traditions. Mr. Bepo always made sure the students traveled to different parts of Nigeria every year. His aim was to help them see and understand their own country well before they ever thought of traveling abroad.
The trips took them to beautiful waterfalls, natural wonders, palaces, and historical sites spread across the nation. They also attended major festivals and visited important cultural centres. Everywhere they went, the students had the chance to learn something new about Nigeria’s history, culture, and environment.
During a visit to some poor areas of Lagos like Mushin, Ajegunle, and Ijora, many students laughed at what they saw. Mr. Bepo quickly corrected them, teaching that life can change anyone’s story. With education, determination, and talent, people can rise from living in the slums to enjoying the best of life. He reminded the students that even some of the wealthy people living in Banana Island today once came from such poor beginnings.
One of the most powerful experiences for Mr. Bepo came during their visit to Badagry. The Akran of Badagry shared the painful history of the slave trade with them, and at the Black Heritage Museum, Bepo reflected deeply on the suffering of Africans who were sold as slaves. What struck him most was the sad irony that, centuries later, Africans were still willingly leaving their homeland to serve in foreign countries in search of better lives. To him, this looked like a new kind of slavery.
