When I wrote JAMB in 2022, I came out of the centre in Ikeja shaking because I wasn’t sure I would hit the cut-off for Medicine and Surgery. My friend Chisom was crying, she kept saying, UNN’s cut-off is too high. What if we didn’t make it?” We genuinely thought our dreams were hanging by a thread that day. But we reached it. I and Chisom are in 400L Medicine at UNN right now. I’m not even joking.
Medicine and surgery has one of the toughest cut-off marks in the country, and it can decide your chances, but meeting it is possible. It’s not only for “born geniuses.” Hard work and consistency actually pay off.
JAMB Cut Off Mark For Medicine and Surgery
The cut-off mark for medicine and surgery in every institution is not the same, it usually depends on the number of candidates that applied for that institution and how they performed. It will never be static. I’m going to list some reputable institutions that offer medicine and surgery in Nigeria and their cut-off marks.

As of December 2025, JAMB has set the general university cut-off mark at 150 again, but if you are going for Medicine and Surgery, forget 150 completely. That score is only for very low-competition courses, not for medical students.
In reality, federal universities like UI, UNILAG, UNN, and OAU are expecting between 270 and 300 just to even qualify to buy the Post-UTME form. Universities such as UNILORIN, UNIBEN, and ABU Zaria are mostly in the 250 to 270 range for a safe chance.
State universities including LASU, UNIMED, and ABSU usually fall around 240 to 260, although the competition is still extremely tight. Private universities like Bingham, Babcock, or Afe Babalola generally accept between 200 and 230, but admission there depends on how much you have.
Last year, the lowest person that got admission into UNILAG Medicine on merit scored 301. The highest in UNN merit list was 338 aggregate. You can see how competitive the course is.
Things To Do as A Medicine & Surgery JAMB Aspirant
- Stop using textbooks, focus more on Past Questions (2008–2025)
- Download the JAMB CBT app and practice 100 questions every night. Speed is everything.
- If your Use of English is weak, buy “Invisible Teacher” or watch Mobolaji videos on YouTube. That woman saved my life.
- Pray. No, seriously. Pray like your admission depends on God (because half of it actually does).
- Have 3 realistic schools in mind. Mine were UNN (dream), UNIZIK (catcher), UNILORIN (safe). I ended up in UNN. Still wearing the same white coat.
JAMB cut-off marks help you know the score you need before you can apply to a university in Nigeria. Some schools are more competitive than others.
Even if you meet the cut-off mark, it does not automatically mean you will get admission, because schools also look at your post-UTME results, your O’level grades, and how many students they want to admit before giving admision.
