Mr. Bepo’s flight is set for Saturday night at 10:00 pm, with boarding starting at 5:00 pm. He plans to leave home by 3:00 pm. Just as he is about to call an Uber, his landlord, Mr. Ogunwale, and his family come to wish him farewell. Mr. Ogunwale even offers to drive him to the airport in his Honda Pilot.
Mr. Bepo packs two big bags and a smaller one. His wife had warned him to travel light but reminded him not to forget Nigerian food items like iru (locust beans), egusi, crayfish, and dry snails, which he bought at Oyingbo market. Before leaving, he had sold his car to the school’s accountant for ₦1.5 million and given his electronics to his landlady.
On the way to Murtala Muhammed Airport, they meet some of his colleagues. Mrs. Grace Apeh (Vice Principal), Mr. Oyelana (the accountant), and Mr. Audu. They had all planned to escort him. At the airport, they help him through check-in and security. They say their final goodbyes and rush back to avoid Lagos traffic.
While waiting for boarding, Mr. Bepo dozes off. In his dream, he finds himself at the Heritage Museum in Badagry, witnessing slaves being beaten and forced onto a ship at the Point of No Return. He counts 7 million slaves, and then a white man orders him to get on the ship too. Bepo shouts, “Nooo!” At that moment, an airline official taps him awake. it’s time to board.
On Monday, after his supposed departure, the school feels his absence deeply. The MD tries to assure the students that a new principal will come. But suddenly, the students notice Mr. Bepo walking back into the school compound. Excited, they rush to lift him up. He tells them joyfully that he is not leaving after all, he has decided to complete his mission in Nigeria. His voice is drowned out by the students as they sing the school’s victory song.
